The Pet Owners Guide to a Clean Car

The Pet Owners Guide to a Clean Car

Many of us enjoy travelling with our furry friends. But as a car owner, this can lead to messes that aren't pleasant for human passengers.

Pets can leave behind unclean interiors and unpleasant odours in our cars. If not properly addressed, these issues can be troubling to eliminate. That's where we come in – with our high-quality, easy-to-clean car mats, Official Car Mats offers top solutions to help pet owners keep their car interiors spotless:

CREATE A FLUFF-FREE ZONE
Fur: it gets everywhere. Carpets, clothes, even our food if we’re not careful. Our cars are no exception – cleaning pet fur from the interior can be strenuous, especially if it has built up over time. Also, you might not be aware, but if a pet feels stressed, they might shed more than usual; this can be common during car rides.

Vacuums can help somewhat, but aren’t exactly ideal when on the road (unless you want to invest in a good handheld). Keeping a lint roller handy in your glove compartment can offer a quick solution at the end of each journey, but a good-quality seat cover will keep pet hair from sticking to your seats entirely (more on that later!).

WIPE AWAY THE WINDOW NOSE ART
An excitable dog on a car ride will probably put their paws up to get a better view, sticking their cold, wet nose against the window, which can leave mud streaks along the interior and nose prints on the windows.

For a quick fix, window wipes are an adequate choice for removing muddy and wet prints, and you can store them in the glove box for convenience. If you’re looking for a more thorough clean, there are several cleaning products for glass in general and many that are car-window specific. Apply these products to the window and surrounding areas and wipe off with a microfibre cloth to keep your car door interiors squeaky clean.

FROM SMELLING RUFF TO REFRESHED
The ‘pet’ smell – we pet owners all experience it; dogs especially tend to give off a particular odour that can be unpleasant, specifically in small spaces. Further, if your pet gets car sick or struggles to control their bladder on trips, the result is a mess that sinks into the upholstery.

Cars are excellent in their ability to stay well-ventilated, which is great when managing pet odour. Keeping your windows open (but not too much in case your pet plots an escape!) will ensure unpleasant smells don’t circulate in the car during long journeys.

Alongside this, you might want to use a fabric refresher on the upholstery for any smell that has seeped into the seats and carpet, and it’s never a bad idea to have an air freshener in your car to keep the air smelling fragrant.

STAYING SQUEAKY CLEAN ON THE ROAD
We’ve touched on this already, but adopting a clean-as-you-go technique is far more effective than letting fur, drool and mud build up in your car over time. The longer you leave it, the more challenging it is to remove them. Odours, in particular, can become absorbed into the car fabric and never entirely leave.

Make a habit of giving your car interior a quick wipe-down after every trip with your pet using some of the suggestions above. A five-minute clean here and there will save you time and frustration later.

FURNITURE UPGRADES
As we’ve mentioned earlier, seat covers are a worthy investment. They can protect your car interior from being scratched and spoiled, and when washed frequently, help to prevent long-lasting bad smells. A top-quality floor mat is also worth buying. As well as preventing dust, it also protects the upholstery.

Do you prefer to keep your furry friend in the boot of your car when taking journeys? A carpeted boot liner will provide a comfortable space for your pet and protect the boot from dirt or spills.
